Santa Margarita completes turnaround defeating Mater Dei

Mater Dei lost more than a game last night.

Monarchs star wide receiver Victor Blackwell separated his shoulder in a 17-7 loss to Santa Margarita. Blackwell was injured early in the 1st quarter, as the USC commit tried to make a shoestring catch.

"They needed to put it back in by taking him to the hospital," Mater Dei head coach Bruce Rollinson said.

Rollinson remains optimistic, even though Blackwell separated the same shoulder earlier in the year.

"You never know about those things. I've had kids who have had dislocations but were able to get back. We'll know more when we get back to school."

Without Victor Blackwell, Mater Dei quarterback Max Wittek was unable to find a consistent rhythm with his other receivers. Sedric Hill had 101 yards receiving, but there were numerous drops in the red zone by other receivers.

The silver lining is Mater Dei knows how to win without Blackwell. He missed a couple of games earlier this year with the same injury. However, entering the ultra competitive Pac-5 playoffs without your big weapon is no way to start the postseason.

The CIF announces playoff pairings on Sunday, but hope of a long playoff run lies on the shoulder of Victor Blackwell.
