Edison shuts out Mater Dei to advance to semifinals

The Chargers blanked the Monarchs 2-0 to advance to the Division I semifinals. It will be Edison's first apperance in the semis since 2000. Goals were scored by Mitchel Alvarez (16th minute) and Kyle Ball (38th minute). Interviews with both players as well as their head coach Charlie Breneman.

Wes Harris saves El Toro from Mission Viejo

El Toro defeats Mission Viejo 3-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the DI playoffs. Chargers GK Wes Harris made two spectacular saves while teammate Colin Parker scored two goals.

Mater Dei's King grabs 26 rebounds in victory over Los Alamitos

Mater Dei defeats Los Alamitos 80-60 to advance to the DI-AA semifinals. Keala King pulled down a school record 26 rebounds on way to scoring 26 points. Highlights & interviews with King, Franklin, and head coach Gary McKnight.

Sister Sister act at Edison

Edison's Samuelson sisters led the Chargers to a Division 2AA playoff victory over Tesoro 54-37. Older sister Bonnie had 24 points and 9 rebounds, while her Freshman sister Carlie had 11 points and 4 assists.

Edison wins physical game over Aliso Niguel

The Chargers were down 32-29 in the 3rd quarter until they decided they were going to play physical. They went on a 12-5 run to eventually win the game 42-37. Edison advances to the quarterfinals of the Division II-AA playoffs where they will host Compton on Tuesday.

Highlights and interviews with head coach Rich Boyce and Dylan Garrity who had 19 pts (8 points in the 4th quarter).

#1 JSerra strikes late to defeat Aliso Niguel

The number one team in the county JSerra was scoreless going into the half. Aliso Niguel had thwarted the Lions strikes on goal by packing most of their defenders in the box. The strategy seemed to be working until the second half.

JSerra's Alex Wasilewski bicycle kicked his 8th goal of the season in the 62nd minute. That goal was followed by Dylan Seedman's breakaway score ten minutes later.

Aliso Niguel's only goal came by Christopher Wehan with five minutes left in the game. It wasn't enough, as the Lions went on to defeat the Wolverines 2-1.

JSerra advances to the second round and will play at Huntington Beach on Tuesday.


Chung makes history hitting ten 3-pointers

Los Alamitos' Tim Chung made school history scoring ten three-pointers. His Griffins defeated San Clemente 68-50 in the first round of the Division I-AA playoffs. Los Al goes on to play Pacifica in the second round on Friday. Jonathan Khamis 2/18/10

Popular student Brent Sirignano was the passenger involved in a car accident last Saturday. He remains in critical yet stable condition. Fans supported him by wearing his favorite color green against Trabuco Hills.

OCVarsity Week in Review 2/8: Top 5 Plays

Highlights from 2/1-2/7 include a boys soccer game between Corona del Mar and Irvine where the outcome is determined in the final minute.

Also, girls water polo as Dana Hills and Mission Viejo play to a third overtime. That's not a typo, I said three overtimes people!

In boys hoops, El Toro takes on #3 ranked Foothill.

Mater Dei is tested in win over Bishop Gormon

The Monarchs defeated Bishop Gormon of Nevada 82-76 in the Nike Extravaganza. Tyler Lamb was spectacular, scoring 26 points on 11 of 19 shooting, whiling grabbing 7 rebounds, and picking up three steals. Keala King scored 21 pts, while Max Hooper lit the gym on fire with his impressive 3-point shooting performance in third quarter.

The Seahawks combo of Anthony Brown & Avery Johnson combined to score 62 points against Orange Lutheran.

#5 Mater Dei defeats powerhouse #2 Whitney Young

The Monarchs beat the number two team in the nation Whitney Young 71-58. Mater Dei was led by their three stars Jordan Adams (21 pts), Kaleena Lewis (22 pts), and Jessica Duarte (19 pts).

Jae Byun leads Sunny Hills to upset Sonora

The Lancers beat Sonora for the second time this season, defeating the Raiders 57-53. Jae Byun led Sunny Hills with 20 points. The Lancers have now won 10 out of their last 11 games.

Luke Gane's inspirational journey leads to UCLA

Edison lineman Luke Gane has accepted a preferred walk-on role at UCLA. Gane sat out all junior year as he suffered through a rare blood disorder but he fought his way back to play every game in his senior year.

Jordan Zumwalt signs with UCLA

The 2009 defensive player of the year Jordan Zumwalt signs his letter of intent for UCLA. He was a verbal commit to Stanford, but decided to stay home near his family. Zumwalt talks to Jonathan Khamis in an exclusive interview for OCVarsity.com.

In girls water polo, San Clemente takes on Mission Viejo, and boys wrestling follows the number one team in the county Laguna Hills.
